Because of their unrivalled physical properties, PLANSEE tungsten-copper materials are widely used as arcing contacts in SF6 high and medium voltage circuit breakers. They have to withstand temperatures of several thousand degrees Celsius to be reached at the surface for fractions of a second. Volatizing copper cools the skeleton of the tungsten, which in any case features a high melting point of 3410°C.
