Sputtering targets for thin film solar cells

Sputtering target for solar

PLANSEE is the expert for powder metallurgically processed materials such as molybdenum and tungsten. They have been convincing as thin film layers for TFT displays for over 20 years.

We deliver sputtering targets to the solar industry for the following technologies:

  • CIS /CIGS (Copper, indium, gallium, sulfur, selenium)
  • CdTe (Cadmium telluride)
  • CSP (Concentrated solar power)

Our metals contribute to the performance of photovoltaics and solar thermal applications as coating materials. They are highly adhesive and resistant against corrosion and oxidation. Thin fi lms made of our materials are reflective, very conductive, and can significantly increase the efficiency of solar cells.
In addition to sputtering targets of pure molybdenum and tungsten, PLANSEE also offers molybdenum alloys, chromium, and materials for absorber layers, as well as substrates for flexible solar cells.

Quality matters. All along the way.

Sputtering target for solarPLANSEE is the only sputtering target supplier with a fully integrated production chain. From raw materials to the final product, we not only develop new materials but also optimize coating processes and films.
Sintering is the central step of our powder metallurgical manufacturing process. In this process we densify porous blanks to compact metallic parts. On the world‘s largest hot rolling mill for refractory metals we produce planar targets with maximum density. Our rotary targets are manufactured with special deformation processes.

120 scientists, experienced technicians and modern facilities make the most out of our materials. Your advantage: stable coating processes and homogeneous layers.

  • optimal thin film adhesion to the substrate guarantees a long lifetime

  • good electrical conductivity and high purity lead to highly efficient solar cells

  • maximum material density results in high sputtering rates

  • optimized microstructure results in homogeneous sputtering rates

  • resistance against corrosion and oxidation ensures stable coating processes

You want more out of it. Clear as daylight.

Greater speed: Our monolithic rotary targets don’t require a backing tube, avoiding contamination of the layer with the backing material. Furthermore, monolithic rotary targets are less temperature sensitive and can be sputtered with up to 30 kW/m.

Better yield: The intelligent target geometries of our u-shaped and dogbone targets enable up to 75% material utilization and can significantly enhance the lifetime of your target.

More energy: New material compositions such as natrium doped molybdenum (MoNa) and MoTa increase the efficiency of the absorber layer. That‘s how you get more out of every ray of light.

MoNa: Sodium (Na) is an important factor for the efficiency of CIS/CIGS solar cells. Sodium doped molybdenum layers can easily be integrated into the existing solar cell production process and guarantee stable and reproducible results.

MoTa: MoTa thin films show a very high resistance against corrosion and oxidation. The material enables long module lifetime and high manufacturing process flexibility: Coated substrates can be easily stored or transported after back contact deposition, eliminating the restriction to immediately continue to process them.

Sputtering targets for solar absorber applications in solar collectors

Sputtering target for solar collectorsChromium is the optimal sputtering material for absorber layers with a high level of efficiency and little emission. PLANSEE sputtering targets made of chromium convince with their high material density and  material homogeneity. With special production processes we achieve a very dense coating thickness on the backing tube on our chrome sputter targets. The advantage for our customers: A longer lifetime and thus a time and cost efficient production process.

PLANSEE offers planar and rotary shaped chromium sputtering targets. (one-piece up to 2 m, diameter up to 200 mm). For temperatures of more than 300 °C PLANSEE offers alternative materials for solar absorbers on demand.

Test us! In our application center.

Sputtering target for solar

We work closely with all the renowned system manufacturers and leading research institutes. The result: innovative materials and thin films, which we sputter and characterize under real conditions. Our application center is also available for you. According to your specifications we will sputter test substrates by RF-, DC- or Pulsed-DC-methods.
Using a high-resolution scanning electron microscope and other instruments of analysis, we evaluate the microstructure, electrical conductivity, adhesion, film thickness and film stress. We check the crystallographic phase, optical properties, chemical composition and morphology of the thin film.
We‘ll gladly send you a vacuum-packed thin film sample for further investigations.
