High Heat-Flux Components

For nuclear fusion PLANSEE develops and manufactures high heat-flux components for first wall, limiter and divertor modules, where steady-state heat fluxes up to 20 MW/m2 and surface temperatures of > 2000 °C can occur.

Prime plasma facing materials are carbon-carbon-composites and tungsten alloys. Highly developed joining techniques are employed for bonding them to water-cooled heat sinks made from copper and molybdenum alloys or steel.

What counts here is knowledge and skills in

  • CAD-supported design and manufacture
  • Mathematical modelling
  • Coating technology
  • High-vacuum brazing
  • High-energy welding processes and surface treatments
  • Non-destructive materials testing
  • Quality assurance

The range of development and production activity extends from metallurgical expertise and prototype design through to the series manufacture of complete modules for those areas of a fusion reactor which are under the highest thermal load.
