Oxidation protection for molybdenum

oxidation protection for molybdenum in glass melting applications

At approx. 400 °C / 752 °F molybdenum starts to react with oxygen. SIBOR®, our patented protective coating for the furnace and glass industry, reliably protects molybdenum in an oxidizing environment up to 1700 °C / 3092 °F. The hard and dense coating generates a diffusion barrier against the base material and creates a SiO2 sealing wherever it is exposed to air.

The advantages
SIBOR® prevents oxidation at temperatures up to 1700 °C / 3092 °F.
The PLANSEE patented coating allows fast heating and cooling processes without limitation (as SIBOR® is a diffusion and compound layer).

Guaranteed oxidation-protection for isothermal lifetimes
5000 h at 1250 °C / 2282 °F
500 h at 1450 °C / 2642 °F
50 h at 1600 °C / 2912 °F

Application areas

oxidation protection for molybdenum in high temperature furnaces

SIBOR® coated molybdenum combines excellent mechanical properties at high temperatures with protection against oxidation and corrosive media for numerous applications:

Glass tanks
SIBOR® allows the installation of glass melting electrodes and glass tank reinforcements in a cold glass tank before the firing up process starts, without the risk of losing the molybdenum component due to oxidation. The previously dangerous process of installing glass melting electrodes into a tank already filled with a hot melt is no longer necessary.

High temperature processing and furnace
Typical components are thermocouple protection tubes, gas lances, burner components and shielding. Even complex and joined components such as annealing boxes and rotary furnaces can be protected with SIBOR®.

Waste incineration plants
Particularly in the area of waste incineration and biomass energy generation, materials come into contact with aggressive salts and their melts at temperatures up to 800 °C / 1472 °F. The corrosion rate can be significantly reduced in comparison with today‘s common materials by using molybdenum with SIBOR®.
In waste incineration plants SIBOR®-coated molybdenum parts are used in critical corrosion areas of the combustion chamber and boiler. Molybdenum/SIBOR® is used as anchors and hooks, nozzles and protection
tubes or cladding material in the combustion or exhaust chamber. Even the burner nozzles of the high temperature wast incineration plants can be made of SIBOR® coated moly.
