Reliable raw materials supply

Tungsten

Plansee, a part of the Plansee Group, is backward integrated into raw material powder supply. Global Tungsten & Powders LLC (GTP), located in Towanda, PA, supplies Plansee, Mi-Tech Tungsten Metals, and GTP Parts with tungsten powders. GTP supports the tungsten raw materials supply through the production of powders with a highly flexible and vertically integrated tungsten conversion plant in Towanda, PA. Ore concentrates and all forms of secondary raw materials are used in production at all stages of the tungsten value chain on site in Towanda and in Indianapolis, while also supplying intermediate products for the global supply chain.

This secures our reliable raw materials supply and guarantees that we do not source or use any raw materials from socially, ethically, or ecologically questionable sources, as GTP holds Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI) certification. By receiving our tungsten powder from GTP and manufacturing locally, we ensure a stable supply of high-performance products, even in times of global supply chain disruptions. Thanks to its advanced recycling technology, GTP is able to process many different types of tungsten scrap. This plays a key role in our sustainable raw material supply.

Find out more about tungsten

Tungsten heavy alloys

We produce tungsten-based composites and alloys using powder metallurgy processes. This technology gives us the flexibility to specifically adapt the microstructure of the materials during the manufacturing process. As a result, we can supply materials whose properties are optimized to the customer's specific applications. Additionally, a wide range of material compositions can be produced, such as the contact material tungsten carbide-copper (WCCu). We rely on tungsten powders from Global Tungsten & Powders LLC (GTP), located in Towanda, to produce these materials too.

Molybdenum

The Plansee Group's shareholding in the Chilean company Molibdenos y Metales (Molymet) ensures our supply of molybdenum. Molymet is the world's largest processor of molybdenum ore concentrates. With its sustainable process technology, Molymet has the lowest carbon footprint compared to its competitors, which has a positive impact on the carbon footprint of our molybdenum products. The molybdenum ore concentrate is shipped to Austria, where it is further processed at Plansee's headquarters in Reutte. The input material is then provided to the experts at Plansee USA, where complex parts are machined.

Sustainability

Sustainability at Plansee

Plansee is dedicated to sustainable practices. Our US facilities adhere to strict environmental standards, minimizing our carbon footprint and promoting eco-friendly production processes. That's why in recent years we've focused on aspects like switching to green energy at GTP Parts and we'll be doing the same in 2025 at our Mi-Tech site in Indianapolis. It is our aim to become more sustainable ourselves by decreasing our emissions. At the same time, we want to use our innovative strength to help our customers develop sustainable products and achieve their sustainability goals.

What's more, social responsibility plays an essential role at our US sites. For example, Mi-Tech donates to The Lord's Pantry at Anna's House, as well as the United Way of Central Indiana. The Lord's Pantry provides a food pantry and weekly meals to individuals and families in need in Indianapolis.

United Way strives to develop community-based solutions to reduce intergenerational poverty and provide basic needs and opportunities for families living in or near poverty. Plansee USA has invested in an ultra-modern manufacturing training center at its Franklin, MA, site. The decision at Plansee USA to invest in an in-house training facility was motivated by the desire to provide continuous development opportunities for our workforce. Training centers around manufacturing theory and the practical application of these theories in CNC turning and milling applications.

In April 2024, Plansee's sustainability strategy was awarded the gold medal by EcoVadis, putting Plansee in the top 5% of the 130,000 best-rated companies worldwide. EcoVadis awards ratings in the area of corporate social responsibility (CSR) based on a wide range of non-financial information, including environmental impact, labor and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement.
