Whenever high-alloy steels or aluminium materials have to be joined, uniform, clean weld connections are essential. With tungsten-inert gas (TIG) welding, that's not a problem. In this process, an arc is generated between a tungsten electrode and the workpieces. The arc heats the materials that are to be joined until they melt and fuse with one another. Once they have solidified again, the workpieces are firmly joined together.

The prerequisites for a low level of arc erosion and therefore a long service life are fissure-free electrodes and a constant tip geometry. Thanks to the outstanding precision it brings to the forming process, Plansee is able to supply high-quality electrodes with a long service life.

Thorium-free pays off.

Legal requirements concerning the handling and utilization of thorium-bearing materials impose high production, packaging (for compliance with radiation limits in accordance with UN 2909), transport and disposal costs on manufacturers and their customers alike. The outstanding quality of our thorium-free electrodes makes the decision easy for us: As of 31.12.2013, we will cease the production of the red WT20 electrodes and produce only environmentally-friendly, thorium-free electrodes.

Microstructure WL electrodes
The microstructures of our WC20 and WL15 welding electrodes are characterized by a particularly uniform and fine distribution of oxides. The benefit to you: a particularly high level of arc stability, good ignition and arc erosion properties and a long service life.

The independent German Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) in Berlin has confirmed the quality of our new gold WL15 electrode: Its ignition time is just as fast as that of the red WT20 electrode. When used with high alloyed steels, the WL15 ignites even faster. Another bonus: Continuous ignition attempts cause significantly less wear to the golden WL15 compared to the WT20.
