Platinum-coated molybdenum and tantalum ribbons.

MY-ESS ribbons are used to conduct electricity reliably to high intensity discharge lamps (HID lamps). Thanks to their special geometry, they reduce the stress at the boundary between the surrounding glass and the electrically conductive ribbon.

Welding aids made of molybdenum

Inside the lamp, the tungsten electrode must be connected to the ESS ribbon. Both the tungsten electrodes and the MY-ESS ribbons have a high thermal and electricity conductivity and high melting points. These properties make welding more difficult. The solution? To join the two components reliably, Plansee supplies thin tantalum ribbons or platinum-coated molybdenum ribbons. These ribbons are inserted between the ESS ribbon and the tungsten electrode and make a reliable weld join possible.

The result: a reproducible process and lower wastage.

The same challenge also has to be met during the production of halogen lamps. In this case, the electrically conductive ESS ribbon and tungsten coil are joined using resistance welding. And here again, our molybdenum and tantalum ribbons ensure optimum welding results.

Rely on top quality.

As standard, we coat our molybdenum ribbons with a platinum layer of between 0.6 and 1.0 µm thick. With our high-temperature process, coating thicknesses are possible down to a minimum value of 0.2 µm.

Molybdenum ribbon

Our platinum coatings are especially dense, extremely ductile, provide guaranteed purity and adhere very well to molybdenum. Because our platinum-coated ribbons are very easy to weld and extremely reliable, they reduce material wastage during lamp production.

And you can also rely on our tantalum ribbons: Tantalum has a very good "gas getter effect". The material takes hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen from the atmosphere and is therefore particularly suitable for vacuum applications in the lighting industry. Thanks to our annealing processes, we can adapt the material properties of our tantalum products to meet the precise requirements of your application.
